Monoc EVO FAQ

Monoc Evo Instruction Set

Hey Congrats on your new Monoc Evo! Big day for you, and for us! We are working on a full FAQ, but for now, enjoy this video overview and brief FAQ that we will expand over time.

Inking Methods- Please review

How do I fill my Evo?
The knob in the back unscrews counter clockwise (until you feel it stop and see the red oring seal in the ink window) and then you can carefully submerge the nib in ink and screw the knob (clockwise) back into the pen, which sucks ink into the inner chamber. Take care not to dip the nib too deep, as the threads and window should not be submerged if possible. Once that is complete, wipe the excess off the nib and then Prime the pen per the instructions below.

How do I clean my Evo?
Set up two plastic containers with clean tap water (plastic so just in case you drop the pen the tip is not damaged by a ceramic mug or glass cup!). Gather some clean paper towels or absorbent cloths. Before we "flush" the evo with water, expel any excess ink. Once the pen is empty by turning it counter clockwise (and you can see the rubber seal in the ink window), submerge the nib and twist the piston clockwise to fill the pen with water. Twist the knob carefully a few times to start flushing the ink out of the pen into the water. Do this again in the second container and then blot the nib with paper towel. Some ink may still be in the feed, so let it wick out on the paper towel for a few minutes and then repeat if necessary. See our video above to learn more, its quick quick once you see how to do it! Do not attempt to remove the feed to clean the nib. This can cause a bunch of issues if done incorrectly.

What inks should I not use in the Evo?
We get this question a lot for our Monoc Nib. Most inks you would put in your other high end pens are ok. However, shimmer inks are not recommended in the Monoc or the Monoc Evo since they can build up in the feed and cause performance issues. This is similar to heavily pigmented inks which can cause buildup in the feed or pen. Please only use inks that are designed for fountain pens, not india ink or other types of inks

Can I unscrew the nib from my Evo? Can I take it apart to clean it?
The nib is not removable from the pen and we do not support user disassembly at this time. The nib is attached with a special tool and is locked in place when we install it. We can disassemble the nib and pen in house for a repair/nib swap/deep cleaning/seal replacement if someone wants to do so down the line but will do this in house to avoid having to train people on these tasks at the moment. In the future, for ease of our international customer base we will support some repair technicians/nib smiths worldwide with these tools and some instructions. Thanks for understanding!

Does the cap post?
The cap on the Evo should not be posted as it can damage the threads over time.

Un-capping the pen
Best to uncap the pen tip up or horizontal. Uncapping the pen tip down can cause the pen to write very wet or oversaturate the feed as the uncapping creates a small vacuum that can pull ink down into the feed.

Writing
Though it is made from Titanium, the Monoc nib is not a flex nib. Please do not attempt to flex the nib. When using it for the first time, approach cautiously and feel it out. Use light pressure and slowly explore the writing surface. The nibs should have a light graphite like feedback and wonderful feel. Try it at different angles to see how the Monoc performs with its unique shape (you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the line weight variations!)

Storage/Travel

It is best to keep the pen nib up when in transit or travel.

Damages to the nib/repairs
Let us know if you drop it. We’ll have to charge you for the repair, but not as much as if you try to fix it yourself or if someone unqualified makes a go at it. Let us take the first pass, even if you love your nibmeister, this is a special product that requires different tools when damaged to recover.

Modifications to the nib
The Monoc is a fantastic platform for modifications by nibsmiths. It has a lot of tip and can be modified into many styles of writing. However, if a nibsmith damages the pen it is between you and nibmeister and not our responsibility. Damages during modification are not covered by Schon DSGN. We may be able to fix it, but we’ll have to look to see what’s up first and then we'll quote the repair.

Thank you all for your support of this project. I am so excited to have these out into the world. Enjoy the pens, let us know what you think and please help us spread the word about this epic project!
